Last December, a lengthy Wired investigation said Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was in the process of building a 1,400-acre compound on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, which would include a underground shelter spanning over 5,000 square feet. That’s more than twice the size of the average private family home in the U.S.

The underground shelter, which was revealed last year, prompted conspiracy theories on social media about wealthy tech moguls building doomsday bunkers.

Zuckerberg is in the process of constructing Koolau Ranch, a 1,400-acre compound that includes two mansions and a dozen buildings.

Mark Zuckerberg describes his bunker, part of his massive Hawaii property, as "just a little shelter." The compound contains 12 treehouses, two mansions, a 5,000-square-foot bunker and extreme security measures.

In addition to the massive bunker, Zuckerberg’s $100 million compound, which is roughly 1,400 acres and known as Koolau Ranch, will have its own energy and food supplies, according to WIRED. When coupled with the land purchase, it will eventually cost more than $270 million.

Mark Zuckerberg denied rumours of a “Doomsday bunker” beneath his $270M Kauai estate, calling it a basic shelter like a basement. He emphasized the ranch’s focus on raising high-quality cattle, not building a survival hideaway.
