1) There is a packed/paved lane to get from the parking lot, around the berms to the viewing field. There is an area with benches, but with gravel covering, and the remainder of the field is grass The parking lot is not paved (gravel/grass) but handicap parking is near the entrance and the paved lane. 2) There is no reservation needed for the short term viewing, just show up. Also, check their schedule for special viewing opportunities (usually Friday &/or Saturday) and special events, which would affect how many people might show up that night.

Across the street is the 'dark' viewing area [red lites only for walking there], which is also publicly accessible. I think reservations are only needed for camping, and telescope use for park-provided 'guided' viewing.
